Tax Season is almost over.
Ten days left for Canadians to file their personal taxes (April 30th folks) and it amazes me how many people think it’s OK to stroll into the office, clutching their carrier bags filled with every piece of paper they’ve received in the last calendar year, who look at you like a Demon from Hell when you tell them that it’s actually too late to be taking on new clients, especially those that need basic bookkeeping done first.
This week a guy looked at me with such scorn and said “Whatd’ya mean, it’s a bit late?” Well, with a little over a working week left and 280 returns in the system still to process and file, I feel justified in saying No.
The guy actually had the nerve to tut and roll his eyes at me and I felt like saying “Hey Buddy! I’ve worked 29 days straight without a break and long days at that! I’ve got a final push to make it through the next ten days but don’t you worry about me. You just take your sweet time “getting around to it” and then expect people like me to “make it happen”. Sheesh!
What I actually said was, “I do apologize Sir, it’s just that we can’t guarantee to have you filed before the deadline if I take you on today. We still have 280 returns in the office to process and you would be 281. I won’t make promises I can’t keep. Perhaps if you come a little sooner next year we can definitely help you.”
I thought I did a good patch up job there until one of my colleagues shouts from the office “That’s what H&R block’s for buddy. Good luck!”
Right.
Moving on.
Easter Sunday
That’s today and I’ve been up since 6:00 am but I’m not feeling the need to be at the office by 7:00 am today. No. Today I would like to enjoy my coffee and say good morning to my family and not worry about you and your taxes. Sound selfish? Too bad.
Easter is late this year and for us mere accountants that’s usually a bad sign. Easter seems to be the flag that raises peoples heads as they look up from a delicious family meal and think “Oh yeah. Best get my taxes in.” Next week is going to be brutal and I’m not sure there’s enough chocolate in the staff fridge to compensate (although it is pretty full right now).
I truly appreciate the business in town who refer clients to us and then visit with Tax Season survival gifts for us to share. It means A LOT! We’ve received fresh donuts, cookies, veggie plates and chocolate galore but strangely enough, no booze….yet.
Greenhouses
I have a new greenhouse. It’s been sitting in it’s packaging since March began (2 day free shipping from Wayfair 🙂 ). I have plants and seeds and irrigation. Sitting in their tubs and packets and boxes… since March began. The sun has been shining for two weeks now and my garden looks like an amazonian jungle. The lawnmower sits forlornly. The ride on died last summer! The frustration level (along with the bone weary, pain inducing tiredness) grows at the same rate as the lawn.
When I got home last night (Saturday) I had plans to mow that lawn and enjoy some down time before dinner. I enjoyed a nice glass of rose as the evening sun set and the lawnmower’s hopes of having a run out died as soon as that first sip hit my lips. Ah Well.
Star Wars Day!
May The Fourth.. be with you! That’s my next DAY OFF. I can’t wait. The list of things I’m gonna take care of in that one day would make another mere mortal curl up and die but not me. I am Anna. Super Accountant and Preparer of Many Taxes.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this little bit of light hearted banter but, if you are in need of Tax help take a look at two of my other posts that will give you everything you need to prepare simple taxes online, yourself.
How to prepare and file this years taxes.
It’s not too late for you to do it yourself but If you are looking for a professional to take you on, at least organize your stuff and tally each category. You will find more doors open to you if you take care of your Professional as they take care of you.
Spa Days.
As a final word. Most female accountants really like Spa Days. I’m just saying.
UPDATE:
I think the Boss read my missives because the entire team was given the morning off on Wednesday 1st May and Spa facials / massages and lunch on the beautiful Patio of The Kingfisher Oceanside Resort & Spa here on Vancouver Island as his way of saying “Thanks Team. Well Done.”
XO
Anna
